Worship

Worship stands at the very heart of our life together as a congregation.  We gather each Sunday morning to celebrate God's love and to reconnect with our family of faith.  Worship at WPC includes a blending of musical styles, as traditional hymns are interspersed with more contemporary praise songs.  We hear the Scriptures read, believing that their ancient words can speak a fresh and living word for today.  Sermons offer words of comfort, challenge, and hope.  Our prayer time is another highlight of the service for many of our members.  During the prayers of the people, all in the congregation are invited to pray aloud or in silence for the individual needs of those known to them, as well as for our community and our world.  We celebrate the Lord's Supper (Communion) on the first Sunday of every month; guests and visitors are more than welcome to participate in the meal with us; our weekly bulletin on communion Sundays includes an explanation of how we observe the sacrament here at WPC.  

Special Services

On Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost, the three biggest days of the church year, we enjoy a unique blend of old and new traditions in our worship celebrations.  Our Christmas Eve service includes familiar Christmas readings and carols, candlelight passed throughout the darkened sanctuary during "Silent Night" . . . and a kids' kazoo rendition of "Go Tell it on the Mountain" as our postlude at the end of the service.  Easter Sunday worship is joyful and festive, both welcoming and reflecting the exuberance of our children as they tumble in the doors from their annual Easter egg hunt. Our Easter service wouldn't be complete without the ringing of bells and the waving of "Alleluia wands" as we sing the traditional resurrection hymns.  On Pentecost Sunday, the traditional birthday of the Church, we enjoy the musical and dramatic talents of our senior high youth, who often rise to the challenge of wearing their Pentecost red, the traditional liturgical color for this ancient holy day, in highly creative ways.

Children

Children are an important part of this family of faith and are always welcome to attend worship with their parents.  We currently offer classes during the latter portion of the 10:30 worship hour for children 3 and up who prefer not to remain for the entire service.  Nursery care is offered for children 2 and under as well.  Families whose young children do remain with them in worship often find that they enjoy snuggling together in the pew the way they do at home when reading a favorite book.  Children's Bibles, crayons and paper are provided in the back of the sanctuary for quiet coloring during the service.   Do explain what is coming up next in the service, and help your children join in reading printed responses aloud from the bulletin and singing praise songs and hymns as they are able.  Feel free, too, to answer those whispered questions about what's going on up in front.  Over time, children will learn to enjoy the various elements of the worship service for their own sake.  For now, it is equally important to help them enjoy the overall experience of sitting together with their favorite people (you!) in church.
